The March Carries on through Cork City creating traffic chaos
for over 2 hours at rush hour on Friday evening.
Here's how it was reported in the Southern Star
Over 200 angry Cork Harbour protesters took over the streets of
Cork on Friday which were full of afternoon shoppers. The 200
persons looked small in comparison to the expected 1,000. The
crowd were very angry and carried placards showing “No More Pylons,’
etc. They seemed to get their message across and handed in a report
showing hundreds of signatures of people to the ESB customer services
personnel in their offices on Academy Street. Angry chanting continued
outside.
The local T.D.s were conspicuous by their absence. The ESB are
supposed to be getting ready to start work in Cobh in the next
few weeks.
The ECO warriors were on the march as well and it was they provided
the music. They are tunnelling into lands due to be crossed by
the pylon scheme. Ronan Luis who was involved in the Glen of the
Downs protest earlier this year, stated there were ten members
camped in Cobh and a further five in Raffeen and he expected about
twenty more to join them in the next few weeks.
The spectacle drew plenty of attention from shoppers and tourists
alike on the main streets of Cork, let us hope the ESB will take
as much notice.
